On Saturday 23rd March, the Loughborough Lightning took on the Hertfordshire Mavericks in the Netball Super League. Support through Sport UK's Claire and Rhian covered the event ...
With an enormous crowd and an excellent starting line up, we knew we were in for a sporting treat. We knew that both teams would be eager to gain those all important points as the season drew to a close and so we expected a hard-fought match. The teams didn't disappoint ...
After a tentative start, the Mavericks were the first to get on to the board and, despite strong opposition from the Lightning, they ended up ahead 15-5 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lightning came back fighting in the second quarter, managing to close the goal gap and put themselves back in the game. There was some excellent play by Lauren Steadman, who worked hard to win back the ball and reverse play. However, the Mavericks refused to let the Lightning get ahead and finished the second quarter in the lead - 27-20.
The third quarter was a goal fest with both teams going goal for goal. At one stage, the Lightning managed to reduce the goal difference to just three. However, once again, the Mavericks' steely determination saw them end the quarter ahead: 40-34.
After their great third quarter, the Lightning started to fade in the final stages and the Mavericks took full advantage: turning over play, attacking hard and ultimately securing a 58-45 win.
Play was fair, with excellent sportsmanship shown by all. It was a true inspiration to watch these ladies play.
